LICENSED COMMERCIAL KITCHEN
We are required by law to prepare food for purchase in a commercially licensed facility. We are in contract with the Stevenson Methodist Church, a facility that is inspected annually by the Health Department.
Our cost is determined by a variety of factors, including meatless versus meat-based, seasonal market price, and duration of kitchen rental. Also included are many hours of behind-the-scenes expertise, such as: menu planning, recipe development, cost research and analysis, shopping, time management, food preparation, packaging, labeling, re-warming instructions, clean-up, and correspondence. And love. Sooooo much love!

We prepare 4 entrees and 4 sides every week. Each item is made from scratch, including bread. We average 92% organic and 89% local. During the off-season we support other Gorge-local and ethical businesses like Azure Standard (Dufur), Rosaurs (Hood River), and Mothers (Hood River).

SPECIALTY DIETS AND ALLERGIES
The Meal Sharing service does not accommodate particular dietary needs. If you or someone in your family has a specific food plan, we can likely accommodate it with our Custom Meal Preparation service.
First and foremost, it’s important to know that we use organic, local, and fresh ingredients as a general rule. We go to great lengths to know our Gorge providers and to stay abreast of changes in the food industry. This helps us avoid pesticides and other toxic chemicals, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), refined sugars, and inhumanely raised animals. Processed items are used sparingly and dependent
upon the overall quality. In many cases, an ingredient will be substituted or eliminated if it does not meet our standards.
Our sweeteners of choice are whole fruit, raw honey, 100% maple syrup, and Xylitol. We choose not to use agave, stevia, and palm/coconut sugar because of their unsustainable production methods, or powdered commercial sweeteners.
HEALTH AND BUDGET
After 7 years of crunching numbers (ours and hundreds of clients), we’re confident that nowhere in the Gorge can you get this level of quality and service at these price points. If your goal is to maximize your health thru vibrant food, maintain or reduce your current budget, and/or balance your time, our Meal Sharing service is your answer.
NO-FUSS PLANNING AND SHOPPING
We do all the planning and shopping so you don’t have to. ROOTS Farmacy creates the menu, prepares the grocery list, drives to/from the farmer or store, cooks the food, then packages and labels your meals. Oh, and cleans the kitchen afterward! All you need to do is re-heat and enjoy.
HOW DO I RE-WARM MY FOOD?
We provide re-warming, freezing, and defrosting instructions for every entrée and side dish, making it a cinch to enjoy your meals when it’s convenient for you. We do not recommend microwave heating as we believe it destroys the nutritional value of food. Our instructions include re-warming in an oven (standard or convection) or on the stove top. One habit of healthy eating worth developing is slowing your pace at meal time.
DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE CONTAINERS?
Nope! The reason has nothing to do with your taste in containers, but our own desire to make the best use of your refrigerator and freezer space, as well as to ensure a proper seal to maintain your food’s fresh flavor. (And hey, glass is better for the planet!). The expectation is that you will wash these containers after use and return them on your next pick-up date. We then sterilize them before next use.
DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE A COOLER?
Yup! The size depends on your order. We provide the frozen blocks and will remove them from your cooler at the time of pick-up.
THIS IS COST EFFECTIVE, RIGHT? WILL I SAVE MONEY?
Yes and yes. We think. Actually we know it is cost-effective; we’ve been tracking our own as well as clients’ numbers for 7 years. We can prepare a 4-course organic meal, with dessert, that costs less per serving than an adult-sized value meal at a fast food restaurant. Whether you will save money depends on how much you are currently spending … and eating.
Having your meals prepared by ROOTS Farmacy is a step in the right direction toward health, affordability, and ease. Given that our ingredients are largely organic, fresh, local, and the biggee, health-conscious, our rates are unbeatable! There isn’t a restaurant in the Gorge that changes its menu monthly with a nod to its environmental impact. Refined sugar free? Always. Home-made? Nothing but. Styrofoam containers? Not a chance! Abused animals? NEVER! Boxed mashed potatoes? The sin of all sins for this Irish lass.
WHEN AND HOW DO I PAY?
A 50% deposit is required when you place your order. The remaining balance is due on the cooking date. We accept credit/debit card, check, cash, or Paypal.
